I haven't done IWAY groups much, but don't pets play a significant role in many of them?

In IWAY builds, the pet's job is pretty much to be "avenged," probably not the standard you want to form a "normal" pet build around

people tend to ignore the usefulness of pets, untill you;re in the pvp arena with your mesmer, necro, ele or monk, and the ranger across the street atarts to sue the ever popular menage` troi of anti-caster shut-down-skills known as: distracting shot+distracting lunge+cholking gas. oh the fun...
pets suck alright...untill your enemy has 4 of his skills disabled.

They're really good in Pre-Searing. But I don't think you're still in Pre-Searing

You all forgetting that you only need 2 skillslots to have a lot of benefit from beast Mastery?
take 10 beast mastery
Charm Animal
Tigers Fury (gives yourself +33% attack speed for: 10sec, recharge 10sec)
that isnt that bad does it? now it lets you dor 50% more DPS with only tigers fury on you with your own atacks + the pet attack power

Pretty much every ranger needs expertise.

Beastmasters aren't reliant as other rangers on it. You can get away with a 9 in it unlike the 13-14 that most rangers need. Ferocious strike saves you a lot of attribute points.

I'm building a R/?? and I want to have a pet. I've noticed practically no one at high lvls uses pets. Why is this? Do they suck that bad? I want to use marksmanship, wilderness surv, and beast mast, and 1 attr from a second prof. Also, what is a good secondary profession for a ranger who want to solo some?
|
Okay, so you want to use a bow and a pet. Here's what I've found. You really only have the attribute points for Marksmanship, then Wilderness Survival OR a Secondary not both. Or you can just concentrate only in Marksmanship. This is what I use personally in PvE:
Expertise:8+1
Marksmanship: 11+1
Beastmastery:11+3+1
Read the Wind
Penetrating Shot
Call of Haste
Disrupting Lunge
Brutal Strike
Ferocious Strike
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal
This build works, does good damage, and hardly ever runs out of energy.

Actually it's bad, REALLY bad... Your pet attack power is non-existant. Why? All your pet does is bite... [and VERRRYYY slooowwwlly too.] The pet has no protection. He'll be dead and your skills are locked. [AoE will kill your pet, regardless of how you look at it...] He can't do damage because he has no skills...
This is one of the 'nothing' pet builds... You're gaining nothing using only 2 pet skills. If you stuff your bar with all petskills and make your own character useless, that's exactly what a pet build should be doing...
All the high damage, fire power, and skill are emanating from you, making YOU the controller of a remote controlled warrior... [or in my case, remote controlled smiting demon from heaven...]
If you bring only charm animal as your true pet skills, then uh... Your pet idea sux... [IWAY doesn't count cause it's a IWAY build, NOT called a pet build...]

Pets aren't too bad. In pvp once I actually got killed by one because I was standing in water and the dang thing was so short tht it was pretty much completely submerged, so I couldn't see it. So if you're sneaky they could be useful. But once you get to the high levels they just kind of become pointless. They die way to often in missions.

Pets are great. I love my pet, Grimtooth. Yeah I am prolly not a "Powerful" as some cheezed out Rangers, but when I am playing RP side of GW I rarely leave town without my pet.
The do have some good abilities. You can make them target things same way as Henchies. Feral Lunge is better than "Hunters Shot" for gettig "Bleeding" on someone.
And more than that, they add a little flavor by being another target for Mesmer Mobs

<--- My War/Ranger has a bear, left it behind at lvl 15 or so. Just died to much
My Ranger/War left her cat behind at lvl 12 or so. Just didnt see any use for it, once the mob lvl got above the pets.
WHen I can I do go back and feed my bear some charr or drakes, jsut to get it along a bit higher. But anything past Doknar's I leave it penned up at home.

about the pet build you guys are all talking about. even if you dont got any xtra skills for your pet it wil still add a decent amount of dmg/sec the only reason why i spent points in BM is because of tigersfury. that will make you do 50% more dmg/sec (yes i know that you attack 33% faster, but dmg is 50% higher).
(btw... a couple of posts a go, the ranger without wilderness survival, i'm quite positive i'll down you pretty fast with my ranger )
allright guys flame away!

It can be quite usefull (althou requires more control since you manage 1 unit and one npc like, also you must monitor your situation and it's situation) - it got some condition spreading attacks, and some that deal 17+ damage AND something else (or double by +17). The problem is that the pet takes 2 slots JUST to take it with you, and if you bring ress signet...well.. 5 slots for something ingluding at least one pet attack, shout or sth (to maximise the usage of it). I am workingo on distracting pet combo (I distract, pet distracts) but so far I got no nerves to level it up to 20.
